KATHMANDU: Diwash Gurung and Prakash Budhathoki scored as Friends Club beat New Road Team (NRT) 2-1 here today to set up a British Gurkha Cup quarter-final match against Laxmi Hyundai Manang Marshyangdi Club (MMC). NRT were limited to chasing Friends in the first half and the constant pressure paid rich dividend as Diwash and Prakash put their side two goals up before the break. NRT pulled one back through Sushil KC thanks to a horrible defending from Santosh Singh three minutes after resumption but Friends held on to advance to the April 24 quarter-final clash against MMC. Diwash put Friends ahead in the 18th minute, making a timely run following a Sameer Bista pass before firing past helpless NRT custodian Raju Yogi. With only goalie Raju to beat, Diwash however missed a sitter in the 23rd minute shooting wildly out from close. Prakash doubled the lead in the 31st minute with a spectacular 25-yard strike. He ran with the ball all the way from midfield before firing in at the top-right corner, beyond the reach of keeper Raju. In a rare NRT chances, Roshan Lamichhane shot inches wide from 10 yards in the 44th minute. NRT pulled one back three minutes after resumption but the goal owed much to a silly Friends defensive blunder. Instead of passing the ball to fellow defenders waiting on both sides, Santosh needlessly tried to dribble the ball past Bijay Kumal and lost possession. Grateful Bijay grabbed the opportunity and crossed the ball at the far post for Prakash to score past defenceless Friends goalie Lucky Karki. Desperate to make comeback into the match, NRT kept Friends in constant pressure in the second half and they almost found the equaliser in the 59th minute. NRT skipper Laxman Ruchal struck a 20-yard powerful shot but Friends custodian Lucky managed a crucial finger-tip touch which made sure the ball rebound off the woodwork. NRT skipper also missed out on a scoring chance a minute later, hitting straight into the body of Friends keeper Lucky. Friends were happy preserving their lead and held on the rest of the match. Both the teams were reduced to 10-man in the dying moments of the game. Friends’ Santosh Tamang and NRT’s Subash Gurung ‘A’ received direct red cards for their unsporting behaviour. NRT coach Raju Kaji Shakya said the silly goalkeeper errors cost them the match. “My players found it hard adjusting to the grassy surface,” said Shakya adding that they could only find their feet in the latter half but were unable to bounce back in the game. Shakya’s Friends counterpart Shree Ram Shrestha, making his debut as a coach at this level, praised his players for their excellent performance despite playing for the first time since last year’s ‘A’ Division League. “We made it to the last eight in the last edition of the tournament and hope to go at least a step further this time,” added the former Friends Club player.KATHMANDU: Diwash Gurung and Prakash Budhathoki scored as Friends Club beat New Road Team (NRT) 2-1 here today to set up a British Gurkha Cup quarter-final match against Laxmi Hyundai Manang Marshyangdi Club (MMC).
